Carissa Smith, a former substitute teacher at Dixon Middle School in Missouri, is facing multiple charges related to the sexual exploitation of underage students.
The 30-year-old teacher has been accused of paying students for sex, offering them cash, alcohol, and marijuana, and then attempting to cover up her actions through intimidation.
According to court documents obtained by PEOPLE, Smith was arrested in November 2024 on charges of statutory rape, sex trafficking, statutory sodomy, sexual contact with a student, hindering prosecution, and patronizing prostitution.
Following her arrest, Smith posted a $100,000 bond (reduced from an original bond of $250,000) and remains under house arrest as she prepares for her court appearance next month, where she will enter a plea.
The allegations against Smith were uncovered after multiple underage students came forward, claiming they were sexually exploited in exchange for money.
The probable cause affidavit reveals that Smith allegedly sent nude photos of herself to one victim via Snapchat, which eventually led to sexual encounters.
She reportedly picked up the students from their homes and engaged in sexual acts with them at her residence while her husband was away, or in her car, sometimes driving them to secluded locations.
Smith is accused of paying the students at least $100 for sex and offering them marijuana or alcohol as part of the arrangement.
The teacher allegedly warned her victims not to report the incidents, telling them she would “get into trouble” if they did.
In one instance, Smith’s brother-in-law reportedly caught her in bed with an underage student after hearing rumors about a video circulating in the community.
The situation was investigated further, leading to the discovery of additional victims.
The case has shocked the local community, with Dixon R-I School District Superintendent Travis Bohrer calling the events “disturbing and distressing” in a letter to families.
Smith’s trial is pending, and she faces significant legal consequences if convicted.
